RV Interior Painting Project at Kacikewin RV Campground, Alberta

Transforming a Cabin RV with Benjamin Moore Scuff-X and STIX Primer

At Alberta Painters Co., we believe that every painting project deserves the same level of craftsmanship, whether it’s a luxury home, a commercial building, or a unique recreational vehicle. One of our favorite recent projects took us to the beautiful Kacikewin RV Campground in Alberta, where we had the opportunity to completely transform the interior of a cabin-style RV.

This wasn’t an ordinary painting project. RV interiors require specialized preparation, premium materials, and the right application techniques to achieve a durable, long-lasting finish. Every surface, every seam, and every material behaves differently than the walls of a traditional home, making product selection and experience incredibly important.

The Challenge

The RV featured original beige wallpaper throughout the interior. While it had served its purpose over the years, the space felt dated, dark, and uninspiring. The homeowners wanted something fresh, modern, and welcoming—a space that reflected today’s design trends while maintaining the cozy atmosphere that makes RV living so enjoyable.

Unlike drywall found in most homes, RV walls are typically made from lightweight composite panels covered with vinyl wallpaper. These surfaces are smooth, flexible, and often expand and contract with changing temperatures. Standard wall paints and primers simply aren’t designed to bond properly to these materials.

Without the proper preparation and products, paint can peel, chip, or fail prematurely.

That’s why choosing an experienced painting contractor matters.

Why Preparation Is Everything

Before applying any paint, proper surface preparation is essential.

For this project, every wall was carefully cleaned to remove dirt, grease, and contaminants that naturally build up over time. Any loose areas were inspected, and all surfaces were prepared to provide the best possible foundation for the new coating.

Skipping these steps may save time initially, but it almost always leads to poor adhesion and disappointing results later.

Choosing the Right Primer

One of the most important decisions on this project was selecting the primer.

We used Benjamin Moore STIX® Waterborne Bonding Primer, one of the industry’s best bonding primers for difficult surfaces.

STIX is specifically designed to adhere to challenging materials such as:

  • Vinyl wallpaper
  • Laminates
  • Glossy finishes
  • PVC
  • Composite panels
  • Previously coated surfaces

Its exceptional adhesion allowed us to create a stable surface for the finish coat without the need for extensive demolition or replacing the RV wall panels.

Using the wrong primer could have resulted in peeling paint within months. Using the right primer ensures the finish stays beautiful for years.

The Perfect Finish: Benjamin Moore Scuff-X

Once the primer had fully cured, we applied Benjamin Moore Scuff-X Matte in the stunning color 1250 Restless Sea.

Scuff-X has become one of our favorite premium interior coatings because it offers exceptional durability while maintaining an elegant low-sheen finish.

For RV interiors, durability is especially important.

Unlike a stationary home, RVs experience vibration during travel, temperature fluctuations, humidity changes, and more frequent contact with walls in compact living spaces.

Scuff-X provides:

  • Outstanding durability
  • Excellent adhesion over properly primed surfaces
  • Superior resistance to scuffs and marks
  • Easy cleaning and maintenance
  • Beautiful, smooth finish
  • Professional appearance with minimal glare

The matte finish gives the walls a sophisticated, modern look while remaining practical for everyday use.

The Color Transformation

The biggest change came from the color itself.

Benjamin Moore 1250 Restless Sea is a rich, calming green that instantly adds warmth, personality, and elegance.

Where the RV once felt plain and outdated with its beige wallpaper, the new color completely transformed the atmosphere.

The finished space now feels:

  • Bright and inviting
  • Modern yet timeless
  • Cozy without feeling cramped
  • Fresh and full of character

The green tones beautifully complement natural wood accents and bring the outdoors inside—making it a perfect choice for a cabin located in Alberta’s beautiful landscape.

Why RV Painting Requires Experience

Painting an RV is not the same as painting a house.

Every project requires an understanding of:

  • Flexible wall systems
  • Bonding to vinyl wallpaper
  • Proper primers
  • Expansion and contraction of materials
  • Low-odor coatings suitable for enclosed spaces
  • Professional application techniques

An experienced contractor knows how these materials behave over time and selects products that are designed to perform in these unique conditions.

At Alberta Painters Co., we never rely on shortcuts or “one-size-fits-all” solutions. Every project is evaluated individually so we can recommend the best products and techniques for lasting results.

The Final Result

The transformation exceeded everyone’s expectations.

What was once a dated RV interior now feels like a modern cabin retreat. The fresh color, smooth finish, and premium materials have completely revitalized the space without the expense of replacing wall panels or remodeling the interior.

Projects like this demonstrate how professional painting can dramatically change a space while adding beauty, value, and durability.
