Transforming an Exotic IPE Deck in Edmonton – Alberta Painters Co.

At Alberta Painters Co., we take pride in working with all types of exterior wood, and one of our favorite projects is restoring and staining IPE wood decks. Recently, our team completed a stunning deck project in Edmonton where we brought an exotic IPE hardwood deck back to life with a Penofin penetrating oil finish.

Why Choose IPE Wood?

IPE has become increasingly popular among homeowners thanks to its natural beauty, density, and durability. It is naturally resistant to rot and decay, making it one of the best choices for exterior decking. However, due to its dense structure, IPE requires the right prep and maintenance routine to keep it looking its best.

The Process – Prepping and Staining IPE

This project involved a full prep and stain process to ensure the deck was ready to absorb the protective oil finish:

  1. Pressure Washing – We started by carefully power washing the deck to remove dirt, graying, and surface buildup.
  2. Light Sanding – After washing, we lightly sanded the deck boards to create a uniform surface and open the pores of the dense IPE wood.
  3. Application of Penofin for Hardwood – For the finish, we used Penofin penetrating oil, a premium hardwood stain designed specifically for exotic woods like IPE.
    • The stain was applied with a brush to work the oil deep into the wood fibers.
    • After application, we wiped away any excess stain to prevent residue from sitting on top of the wood. This ensures a smooth, natural look and prevents sticky buildup.

Why Proper Prep Matters for IPE

The secret to maintaining IPE is in the prep work. Unlike softer woods, IPE doesn’t hold stain for more than a year or two. To maximize the life of the finish, the surface must be:

  • Cleaned thoroughly (using pressure washing or a specialized wood cleaner).
  • Stripped if there are any old coatings left behind.
  • Brightened to balance the wood’s pH and prepare it for oil absorption.

Once properly prepped, IPE can be stained, bringing out its rich natural tones and providing lasting protection.

The Final Result

After following these steps, this Edmonton deck was completely transformed. The deep, rich color of the IPE wood now shines through, enhanced by the protective penetrating oil. With regular maintenance and re-coating, this deck will continue to look stunning for years to come.
