Penofin Transparent Penetrating Oil Finish Stain & Sealer: A Reliable Choice for Deck Restoration

This past summer, we had the pleasure of restoring a deck and railing using Penofin Transparent Penetrating Oil Finish Stain and Sealer in the Natural Cedar color. After putting the product to the test, our review is overwhelmingly positive. However, as with most wood restoration projects, achieving durable and visually stunning results requires proper preparation and strict adherence to application guidelines.

Many deck stain issues arise because of improper preparation or application. Let’s walk through our process and share key insights to ensure you get the best results from Penofin for your next deck project.

Step-by-Step: How We Restored the Deck

1. Power Washing

The first day was all about cleaning. We power-washed the entire deck to remove dirt, grime, and loose debris.

2. Application of Cleaner and Wood Restorer

We used Behr Deck Cleaner and Wood Restorer to prepare the wood. This step is crucial to restore the deck’s natural beauty and ensure the stain penetrates evenly.

  • Product used: Approximately two doses of 2 gallons.
  • Method: Applied the cleaner thoroughly across the surface, let it work as directed, then power-washed again to rinse off residues.

3. Drying Time

After cleaning, we allowed the deck to dry completely for 24 hours. Proper drying ensures the stain adheres properly and reduces moisture-related issues.

4. Sanding

The following two days were dedicated to sanding every inch of the deck, including railings and floorboards.

  • Goal: Achieve a smooth, uniform surface that allows the stain to penetrate evenly.

5. Stain Application

When it was time to apply the stain, we carefully checked the weather forecast. Key considerations include:

  • Avoiding direct sunlight during application.
  • Ensuring no rain for at least two days after staining.
  • Picking a day with low humidity for optimal drying.

Penofin requires a wet-on-wet application, meaning the second coat is applied immediately after the first, while the surface is still wet. This ensures the oil penetrates deeply into the wood, enhancing its natural beauty and protection.

Why We Recommend Penofin

Penofin stood out for its exceptional performance, natural finish, and ease of use. Here’s why:

  • Deep Penetration: Its oil-based formula seeps into the wood, providing excellent protection against moisture and UV rays.
  • Beautiful Finish: The Natural Cedar color brought out the wood’s grain beautifully, giving the deck a warm and timeless look.
  • Ease of Adjustment: If you overestimate the amount of stain needed, unopened gallons can be returned.

Tips for Success

  1. Preparation is Key: Don’t skip cleaning and sanding. The durability and appearance of your stain depend on it.
  2. Follow Instructions: Read and adhere to the product label’s guidelines
